Winter is on its way, and for some parts of the country, snow removal prep season is upon us. Up for consideration today are two running, driving, American 4x4 pickups. Both have clean titles and come equipped with what the seller claims is a $1500-1600 plow setup; both have a crack in the windshield, and both are asking $2500.
First up is this 1988 GMC K2500.
The details:
Inspected until December
8' bed
Extended cab
Trans replaced 3 yrs ago
Motor replaced last year; not even 1000 miles on it since
Solid truck; No rot

Crack in windshield
Good tires
233,xxx miles

Next up, we have this 1997 Ford F-250.

Not a rust bucket. Plow was just put on last season, never plowed before.
Has an oil leak.

7.5' meyer plow in good condition

New muffler
New brake lines
New battery
New 4x4 linkage
New starter
Crack in windshield
116,xxx miles

So, let’s assume you need a cheap second or third vehicle to plow heavy snow from a long driveway or parking lot, and also make the short commute to work in winter weather and occasionally haul landscaping/construction materials from the local HD. Pick your plow truck in the poll below, and add your own suggestions in the comments.

Ford, because IIRC the Chevy IFS wasn’t great with added weight. If I had to choose though, I’d pick a solid axle Dodge.

Plowing is supposed to be hell on transmissions, and GM trans are supposedly super tough. Just on that I’d pick the GMC.

The shorter wheelbase, the better. That being said, something looks strange with the Ford. It looks like the plow frame is meant to be mounted farther back than the set up for right under the bumper like whats on the truck.

It’s against my religion to pick the GMC.

Can confirm, my dad plowed with an ‘88 Chevy. I’ll take the Ford, Dodge autos are made of glass.

They weren’t much worse than Ford and GM’s of the 1990's, plus it’s worth it for the solid axle over the I-beam.

The solid axle is definitely better, but I disagree about the transmissions.

no they were terrible. knew many people with 90's 1500 rams that made it less than 100k and needed trans work. And few of them ever towed with them

We haven’t had a Chevy to do that either.
